Intelligent Verbatim Transcription For Focus Group Discussions

21 Nov 2022 | TI-News

Focus groups are an integral part of qualitative research, they are facilitated discussions held with a defined group of people to draw out their perceptions and attitudes, feelings, beliefs, experiences and reactions in a way in that would not be feasible using other methods, for example observation, one-to-one interviewing, or quantitative questionnaire surveys.

When you have open-ended questions about a subject or product, focus groups measure reactions, not just opinions and can be used to gain a breadth of understanding of participants’ thoughts and experiences, using group dynamics to gain shared experiences.

Transcribe your focus group recordings

Once you’ve collected your valuable data, you may be dealing with many hours of recorded focus group discussion. What’s the best way to put this information into a usable format and make sense of what you’ve heard? It all starts with transcribing your focus group.

Transcripts transform the spoken word in audio and video content into text which can then be searched, enabling the researcher to identify themes more quickly.

What do researchers need from their transcript?

  • An accurate reflection of the discussion that’s taken place.
  • A well presented Word document that makes it easy to read and identify the different participants in the group, i.e. the moderators and the respondents.
  • Market researchers in particular are happy to have their questions stripped down and irrelevant chatter omitted, with respondents’ words accurately captured.
  • Academic researchers occasionally prefer their respondents to be individually identified.
  • Medical researchers sometimes require their participants to be colour-coded.

Why Intelligent Verbatim?

Intelligent verbatim transcription transforms recorded speech into text while editing out fillers and repetitions, such as ‘ums’ and ‘likes’, filler phrases like “you know” used excessively, and any verbal tics that may distract the researcher from quickly parsing the content of the focus group.  It’s easier and quicker to analyse the transcript.

Why Is Intelligent Verbatim Beneficial For Group Discussions?

This style of transcription is popular because it provides a more readable transcript while staying true to the nature of the discussion.  Intelligent verbatim transcription is a level of transcription that can leave the process of transcribing an audio recording to a certain amount of discretion to an expert transcriber, who will use their experience to omit certain elements if they  are certain they do not help the researcher.  (repetitions, irrelevant chat and interviewer’s encouraging ‘hmms” etc).

Intelligent verbatim keeps every bit of important content while prioritising ease of reading, parsing and gathering data. Reading an intelligent verbatim transcription is much easier on the eye, which makes it quicker for you to scan through and pick out key themes and discussion points from the focus group.

Why Choose Transcribe It?

When Transcribe It started in 1992, our very first client requested focus group transcription in intelligent verbatim.  We have therefore built up a detailed expertise and understanding of researchers’ needs.

Transcribing focus groups is difficult and requires a lot of time, concentration and patience. That is why it’s beneficial to hire a professional transcription service who can do the hard work for you.

We have been transcribing group discussions for 30 years. In order to ensure the accuracy of the transcript, our transcribers listen closely to your audio or video group discussion [on Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc] and research any jargon as needed.

If required, voice identities are tracked to each of the participants and can be colour coded, ensuring common themes can be more easily identified.
