Transcribe It, the UK’s longest established transcription agency, launched in the same year as Reservoir Dogs and Wayne’s World hit the screen in 1992, and Whitney Houston stayed at the top of the charts for 14 weeks, with I Will Always Love You.
1992 was the year where the average house price was £68,634 and a gallon of petrol cost £2.13. The 25th Olympics Games opened in Barcelona, Bill Clinton was elected as the 42nd US President and America voted for either a young or old Elvis Presley to be used on a postage stamp.
We also saw the Royal Family’s “annus horribilis,” marked by divorces and a fire at Windsor Castle, world events included the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and the end of apartheid in South Africa.
April 1992: Transcribe It Launch
What began as a sideline in the late 1980s—armed with tapes and typewriters—quickly evolved into a professional venture as the rise of home and small office PCs presented Nicki Brown, Director, with the perfect opportunity to elevate transcription services into a streamlined, tech-enabled business.
Market research and focus group transcription quickly became the cornerstone of Transcribe It’s services, supporting major brands like BT, Boots, Tesco, Evian, and British Airways. Notably, throughout the 1990s, the team played a key role in transcribing the research that paved the way for the launch of the original Tesco Finest range—a milestone in British retail branding.
2000 onwards: How far we’ve come
The invention of the World Wide Web enabled dial-up internet access and website hosting to explode into use, and the way transcription services were delivered changed forever.
We moved from:
- Royal Mail to Email
- Tape Cassette to Digital Upload
- Printed transcripts of 60 pages to nearly instant upload online
Where Are We Now?
So 33 years on, where are we?
Methods of conducting research have evolved and the evolution of transcription services has kept pace with it, with COVID and the onset of Zoom and Microsoft Teams, face to face interviews and focus groups over the internet, through to audio transcription from mobile phones, podcasts, live streaming, so the requirement for transcription services continues unabated.
Security and confidentiality of personal data – which voice and video files are classed as within the Data Protection Act – are now paramount. Transcription services providers must comply with GDPR legislation and ensure their practices keep clients’ material safe. Transcribe It moved to the cloud and well established providers will have Cyber Essentials accreditation and high standards of security on their platforms.
Transcribe It has grown both in size and credibility, and widened its reach from market research focus group transcription to academic transcription, medical transcription, police interviews, HR, and even live transcription from Zoom or Teams.
The Future
As AI continues to advance, what lies ahead for the human transcription services industry?
We have seen unprecedented advancements in AI, which have had a profound impact on transcription services.
However, it still faces significant limitations that prevents it from entirely replacing research transcription services provided by human professionals. The complexities of language, technical jargon, nuances of context and the ability to accurately decipher various accents and dialects remain challenging for AI algorithms.
The world assumes that the elimination of the human transcriber from the food chain is imminent, and will reduce costs drastically. But ASR struggles to reach accuracy rates higher than 80%, even under ideal recording conditions.
Transcribe It has adapted and now offers professional checking and proofreading of AI transcripts, especially useful for large volume, academic transcription subjects.
As AI continues to evolve, it will undoubtedly enhance transcription efficiency and accessibility. However, human transcriptionists will remain indispensable for tasks that demand accuracy, context, comprehension and specialised knowledge.
Transcribe It is proud to be the UK’s longest established professional transcription service. We’ve grown, adapted, and continue to offer excellent quality at a reasonable price.
